Officials said the deer was found shot within Monticello city limits around January 15. Its body was found in an area of trees on a golf course. The deer was shot with " an orange, metal crossbow bolt with a field tip, likely fired from a miniature, pistol-style crossbow," officials said. That type of weapon is not legal for harvesting big game animals, they added. No deer hunting seasons were taking place when the deer was estimated to have been killed. It also didn't look like any attempt was made to get meat from the deer, officials saying it was "left to waste." If anyone has information on the illegal death of the deer, DNR officials ask them to call the UTiP hotline at 800-662-3337, report it on the UTDWR Law Enforcement app, text 847411 or call Sgt. Devin Shirley at 801-592-0212. If any guilty party is found, officials anticipate charging them with a class A misdemeanor charge of wanton destruction of protected wildlife and waste of protected wildlife.
