As Britain's upper House of Lords prepares to scrutinise the government's Online Safety Bill on Wednesday, WhatsApp and other messaging services issued an open letter demanding an"urgent rethink" of the legislation."The UK government is currently considering new legislation that opens the door to trying to force technology companies to break end-to-end encryption on private messaging services," WhatsApp said in an open letter on its blog page dated April 17.
Responding Tuesday to the letter, the office of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisted the government"will not introduce routine scanning of private communication". It added that"friends, family members, employees, executives, journalists, human rights activists and even politicians" could be affected.The letter concluded that"the UK government must urgently rethink" the planned legislation,"revising it to encourage companies to offer more privacy and security to its residents, not less.
