Talking to newsmen in Washington, the Finance Minister said Pakistan would be seeking a medium-term bigger package from the international monetary fund to fully stabilize its economy.
He said Pakistan needs a breathing space of three to five years to introduce and implement the much-needed structural reforms to revive its economy. The Finance Minister is expected to meet IMF executive Director Kristalina Georgieva on the sidelines of the spring meetings. Geogieva has recently been appointed by the IMF Executive Board for a second five-year term starting on October 1.
The IMF Executive Board is due to meet this month to approve the release of last tranche of the 1.1 billion dollars from its existing three-billion-dollar standby arrangement with Pakistan. The 9 month standby arrangement expires this month.
