Police uproot camp pegged to protest against dearness

MUZAFFARABAD – Police on Saturday uprooted a camp set up by locals to register their protest against dearness and exorbitant electricity bills.

The district administration and police sprang into action and a contingent of law enforcers uprooted the camp set up by citizens under the umbrella of the Public Action Committee at Azadi Chowk. On the call of the committee, a number of people gathered for protest and tore the power bills which, they said, were beyond their capacity to pay. They also demonstrated in reaction to the police action and resisted it.

Police teams cracked down on the protest leaders and arrested Jameel Kashmiri and three others. They intensified raids to arrest other activists as well. A number of people gathered at Adda Shaheed Chowk to let loose their indignation. Police, however, tried to disperse them.

Reuters news agency said the protesters demanded the Indain government to stop the extrajudicial operations against separatists seeking Punjab as an independent state. They also demanded punishment for the killers of Nijjar. Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Directly linked the Indain government of involvement in the murder of Nijjar in June in British Columbia. Ottawa also expelled a senior indian diplomat which triggered a tit-for-tat move from new delhi and deepened diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Nijjar, who worked as a plumber, left the north Indian state of Punjab over two decades ago and became a Canadian citizen. He had supported the formation of a Sikh homeland. India designated him a 'terrorist' in July 2020.
