On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, celebrated annually on October 17th, the world unites to raise awareness about the scourge of poverty and to promote dialogue between those living in poverty and society at large.
The theme also serves as a clarion call to political leaders and policymakers, urging them to prioritize human dignity as the guiding principle in all decision-making processes. The journey of this day began in 1987 when Joseph Wresinski, a French Catholic priest and human rights advocate, founded the International Movement ATD Fourth World. Father Wresinski had firsthand experience with extreme poverty and understood the pressing need to address this issue on a global scale. He recognized that poverty wasn't just a matter of economic deprivation but also a violation of human rights and dignity.
