A new prequel manga series set in the Cyberpunk Edgerunners universe will explore the adventures of fan-favorite characters Rebecca and Pilar before the events of the anime. Written by Bartosz Sztybor and illustrated by Asano, the manga promises a darker comedic take on the world of Cyberpunk.
While plans for a second season of the popular anime remain under wraps, CD Projekt Red and Trigger are keeping fans engaged with a new prequel manga series. This series, soon to be available in English courtesy of Dark Horse, dives into the adventures of fan-favorite character Rebecca and her brother Pilar before the events of the anime. Think of it as a prequel to a prequel.
We had the opportunity to speak with manga writer Bartosz Sztybor to gain insights into the series' creation and what fans can anticipate from CD Projekt Red and the ever-expanding Cyberpunk universe. Sztybor emphasized their overarching goal: to portray a vast, authentic, and believable world through complex characters and grounded narratives. He stressed the importance of making the characters feel alive, with their own histories, dreams, and motivations. Sztybor explained that certain characters' arcs were already complete, which is why they are cautious about creating prequels or origin stories solely for the sake of it. David and Lucy, for example, had their stories fully told within the anime. However, other characters, like Rebecca and Pilar, who appeared as supporting figures, possessed the potential to become main stars. Kadokawa, a renowned Japanese manga publisher, expressed interest in adapting Cyberpunk Edgerunners into a manga format, which CD Projekt Red eagerly embraced. This marked a significant moment as it's not common for Western intellectual properties to receive the manga treatment. Sztybor saw this as an opportunity to explore new narratives within the Cyberpunk universe.
