U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reveals she is facing resurfaced trauma caused by AI-generated pornography depicting her. The altered image has deeply affected her as a survivor of physical sexual assault.
by RAY LEWIS | The National DeskU.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks during the Women's Unity Rally at Foley Square on January 19, 2019 in New York City.published Monday she is experiencing resurfaced trauma due to AI-generated pornography depicting her.
The congresswoman saw an altered image of someone forcing her mouth on another person’s genitals, according to the outlet. There’s a shock to seeing images of yourself that someone could think are real,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez explained. “As a survivor of physical sexual assault, it adds a level of dysregulation,” she continued. “It resurfaces trauma.” The image was manipulated with artificial intelligence. Similar media – known as "deepfakes" – are often the product of attempts to exert power and embarrass people depicted, according to the congresswoman. Once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez noted. “It parallels the same exact intention of physical rape and sexual assault, is about power, domination and humiliation. Deepfakes are absolutely a way of digitizing violent humiliation against other people.” She argued the inability to forget visceral media like deepfake pornography is because of human biology. “There are certain images that don’t leave a person. They can’t leave a person ... It’s not a question of mental strength or fortitude – this is about neuroscience and our biology,” the congresswoman noted. “It’s not as imaginary as people want to make it seem. It has real, real effects not just on the people that are victimized by it, but on the people who see it and consume it.” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's status as a person of color, as well as being the youngest woman elected to Congress, were motivating factors for the creators of the artificially pornographic image, she contends. They want to teach us a lesson for being there, for existing: This is not your place, and because you’re here, we’re going to punish you,” the congresswoman said. She introduced the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act of 2024, or the DEFIANCE Act, in March following the appearance of digitally altered pornographic pictures of Taylor Swift on the internet. The singer was a victim of deepfake media, which has disproportionately targeted women, according to a 2023“Kids are going to kill themselves over this,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez predicted. “People are going to kill themselves over this.” The congresswoman disclosed she has struggled to live with the consequences of artificial intelligence. “There have been times in the past where I did have moments where I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I can survive this,'” she said. “And in those moments sometimes I remember, ‘Yeah, that’s the point. That is quite literarlly the point.’ I was the youngest woman elected to Congress, and it took over 200 years for a woman in her 20s to get elected to Congress, when this country was founded by 25-year-old dudes!”
