Caffè Florian, the world’s oldest coffee shop, celebrates its 300th anniversary.Among those who patronized the three centuries-old Venetian bar were cultural figures such as Giacomo Casanova, Lord Byron, Andy Warhol, novelist Ernest Hemingway, poets Charles Dickens, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and English comic actor Charlie Chaplin.

Alla Venezia Trionfante, as it was originally called, was launched by Florian Francesconi on December 29, 1720. The richly decorated rooms of Caffè Florian feature artwork by 19th Century playwright Carlo Goldoni. Meanwhile, the second oldest coffee shop in Italy is Rome’s Caffè Greco, founded in 1760, forty years after Caffè Florian.
