MANILA — Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil are the latest celebrities to speak up on mental health awareness, amid the controversy involving fellow Kapamilya star Nadine Lustre and radio host Jobert Sucaldito, who made a suicide-related joke targeted at the actress.
Sucaldito’s on-air remark — which launched an investigation from ABS-CBN News, and for which he has since apologized — drew widespread criticisms online, with local personalities coming to the defense not only of Lustre, but also those who are grappling with mental health issues. Soberano and Gil were asked for their opinion on the topic on Thursday, after a press conference for their series “Make It With You,” ahead of its primetime debut on January 13.
Gil, 27, revealed that has had his own struggles with mental health. He also shared that a close friend belatedly admitted to him that he at one point considered taking his own life.Soberano, 22, noted that as a psychology student, she has come to have a deeper understanding of mental health. She urged others to educate themselves on the matter, “so that we can pinpoint when someone is going through something.
“We shouldn’t make jokes or talk lightly about the different mental health terms, kasi we don’t know kung ano ang pinagdadaanan ng bawat tao. I think it’s better na if we don’t know anything, we just keep quiet,” she said.
