Prolonged exposure to the ash spewed by Taal Volcano could lead to a number of ailments, the Department of Health (DoH) warned on Monday.

“If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque 3rd said in a statement. An infographic posted by the Health department on Facebook said volcanic ash contains carbon dioxide, sulfur and fluorine, which could be harmful to humans.“If venturing outside cannot be avoided, use an N95 mask and wear protective clothing, including goggles,” he said.

The United States Food and Drug Administration said a typical face mask does not give the same protection as an N95 mask because it only blocks “splashes and large-particle droplets.”
