“The promise of the President [Rodrigo Duterte] to decongest EDSA is at hand. We are so close, malapit na po . This year, we’ll see major improvements in EDSA,” Public Works Secretary Mark Villar said on Friday.
Villar said the project, now at 76 percent, would be a “major blow” to the traffic congestion, as it would take more than 100,000 vehicles from those traversing EDSA once it opens in the second quarter of this year. “EDSA is obviously, impossible to widen because of the value structures alongside, so the only viable solution is to improve road network that would bypass it,” Villar added.
But the President later on had given up seeking emergency powers to solve Metro Manila’s traffic problem, saying he would rather let EDSA rot if some politicians would insinuate that he would use the emergency powers for corruption.
