Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva on Friday disclosed that flood control programs will receive a 17.8% increase under the proposed 2024 national budget even if flooding persists in several parts of the country.

“Imagine, P182 billion this year. Next year, P215.6 billion. Nag-increase ang budget ng flood control ng 17.8 percent. Kahit sa harap ng pangulo, kaya kong sabihin na in the past four decades, past five or six administrations, di talaga nabubuo, walang pakinabang. Nasasayang ang salapi ng bayan,” Villanueva said in an interview with reporters.

The senator made these remarks as he highlighted the need for an integrated flood control plan in the country which will connect the drainage system in different localities in a bid to mitigate the problem of flooding. The president and the lawmakers tackled this problem during their dinner last Wednesday at Malacanang Palace.

Among the issues that they will discuss in the hearing are the protocols in releasing waters from dams, the master plan for flood control in Central Luzon, and the possibility of incorporating the integrated flood control master plan with the proposed Department of Water Resources, Villanueva said.
