Video conferencing is a system that will allow the detained person to testify and be crossed-examined while inside their detention cells. Supreme Court’s chairman of the Committee on Revision of Rules, Associate Justice Diosdado M. Peralta said the new system would apply to pending and newly filed high-profile criminal cases.
The system will be used in high-profile cases referring to violations of the Human Security Act like terrorism, crimes against humanity, and those whose detained suspects are considered “high-value targets” because of the threats they may pose to the security of the jail facilities, the court, and the community.
Currently, there are about 4,000 detainees in three Davao City jails that are managed by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology . Hundreds of Maute, Abu Sayaff and New People’s Army members are detained in these jail facilities. Justice Peralta and Court Administrator Marquez have conducted the training seminars for Davao City judges, prosecutors, lawyers from the Public Attorneys Office and jail wardens from the Davao City District Jail.
