Pro-administration congressmen will no longer be allowed to form a “company union” and claim acknowledgment as minority bloc should the House of Representatives chooses Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco as its next speaker.

Reacting to the suggestion of veteran opposition Rep. Edcel Lagman , Velasco said meddling into the minority’s role in the chamber will be taboo if he is elected speaker.

In several press statements released to the media, Lagman called on the administration-backed coalition to field only one candidate for the speaker as guarantee that the other candidate will come from the true opposition. The practice, however, is believed to have been started during the 16th Congress when the coalition supportive of then President Benigno Aquino III voted his political allies, Quezon City Rep. Feliciano Belmonte Jr. as a speaker and San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora as minority leader.
