Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian and Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad-Borja, along with officials from the Department of Education-Valenzuela, led the kick-off ceremony for the program at the Canumay East Elementary School on Monday, Aug. 8.
The local government said the reading camp will be conducted in the city’s public schools until Aug. 19, where a total of 8,681 Grade 3 and 6 students — 808 non-readers and 7,873 frustrated readers — will be able to participate in the reading classes. It added that there are also various games and activities that will make the experience fun for the participants.
The Valenzuela Reading Camp is a component of the city’s Education 360 Degrees Investment Program, a holistic approach to uplift the quality of local basic education focusing on all aspects of students’ learning. The local government said that the reading camp was first launched in 2014 during the first term of former Mayor and now District 1 Rep. Rex Gatchalian. It was temporarily halted in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
