Those who have already been injected with a particular COVID-19 vaccine should refrain from receiving a different type, as the effects of mixing vaccine technologies have yet to be analyzed, according to an infectious disease expert.

“With different platforms, there are no studies yet to determine...how it will interfere with antibody production,” Dr. Rontgene Solante told CNN Philippines on Sunday.

There are different kinds of COVID-19 vaccine, such as inactivated, viral vector, mRNA, and subunit. For instance, those developed by Chinese firms Sinovac and Sinopharm are examples of the inactivated type. This uses a killed form of SARS-CoV-2, one of the oldest and tried-and-tested methods of prompting an antibody response.

Meanwhile, the antivirus shots of the British-made AstraZeneca and Russian-made Sputnik V are examples of a vector vaccine. Unlike the inactivated one, this type utilizes a different virus as a vector, which delivers instructions to the cells to produce the COVID-19 spike protein needed to trigger an immune response.

Coronavirus vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, and most recently Sinovac are the only ones that have so far received emergency use approval from the country's Food and Drug Administration. The Philippines received its first vaccine shipment on Sunday after the Chinese government donated 600,000 vials of Sinovac’s CoronaVac. Health workers and uniformed personnel are expected to be first to receive these doses.
