A failure in the uninterruptible power supply equipment being used by the CAAP triggered the technical problems that affected flight operations at the Naia and prevented aircraft on international routes from passing through PH airspace on New Year’s Day.

According to Tamayo, when one of the UPS failed at 9:49 a.m. due to a cooling blower conking out, the other UPS also failed, leaving the CNS/ATM powerless.Tamayo explained that the after the UPS being used by the Air Traffic Management Center for its commercial power supply conked out, the UPS backup failed to go online.

When technicians tried to bypass the damaged UPS, Tamayo said that they placed an automatic voltage regulator that would limit the power coming into the system at 220 volts. The power supply issue was fixed, but it then issued a warning for overvoltage, as the system was receiving 380 volts. Tamayo explained further that the VSAT was key to communicating with arriving and departing planes, as these are satellite dishes used for communication, navigation, and computation of the data.

“No’ng nilipat nila ‘yon, this occurred at about 5:45 this afternoon, we got the CNS/ATM back online,” he added.

Infrastructures like these should have multiple redundancy. Worked at a power supply manufacturing company. There are set-ups that is not allowed to fail because of power outage. Hence the multiple redundancy.

Typically, if its on a redundancy design, both UPS in a normal operation shd be sharing the load meaning 50%-50%. If one fails, it shd still be 'uninterruptible' since the load is just carried by the 2nd UPS. Seems, this is not the case here.

Heads not rolling yet. Or ever. Impunity.

Sa tinagal-tagal ng NAIA, ngaun lang ngyari yan..tapos ang solusyon ibenta sa pribadong sektor? Style ni Marcos Jr nasa dugo talaga ang paggawa ng mga cronies just like his evil dictator father!

Worst airport ever….

As expected No Accountability. Walang Command Responsibility. Walang May Delicadeza. WagKami incompetent ManilaWelcomes2023

From air traffic controller Renz Bulseco

Punyeta

Pustahan tayo: the admin’s solution for this is renaming the airport

I guess pag napalitan na ang name ng NAIA to PPP c/o our greatest and brightest congressmen, mawawala na ang lahat ng issues ng airport. I prioritize natin yang palit na pangalan na yan. 👍👍🤣🤣

UPS is supposed to be a savior not a weak point.

Unforeseen? Walang may kasalanan...walang aako ng responsibilidad?

Is it ok already?

it was interrupted
