Understanding Homophobia: Three Theories Explained

WHY do some straight men cringe at the mere mention of the G-word?The fear and loathing of gay men is called homophobia. Dr. Charles Silverstein and Felice Picano give us three theories about why this fear exists.The first is that our society is repressed and that homophobia is only one aspect of a more general fear of sexuality. In short, we should fear gay men because some of them freely express their sexual orientation and gender identity in a flamboyant fashion.

Most of their straight male classmates are in awe of them, at the arc of their intelligence streaking like a comet in the sky. A few, however, snigger or make inaudible remarks, their eyes glazed with envy. When this happens, I usually ask the noisy guy if he could add anything to the discussion? More often than not, there would be the silence of the lambs.Another possible reason is that they're in the closet.
