‘Unacceptable’: Lacson on U.S. Senate resolution calling for dismissal of charges vs. De Lima, Ressa

“Allowing and denying the entry of foreigners into the territory of the United States, or any country for that matter, is a matter of right of that host country. They don’t even have to justify it,” Lacson said in a statement.

“What is unacceptable is the passage of a resolution by the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations that calls for the dismissal of charges against any respondent in a criminal case, in this case, Senator de Lima and Maria Ressa,” he added. “It is an affront to the integrity of our courts and the country’s judicial system. Even the President or any executive official, or any member of our Congress, cannot issue a formal resolution that will encroach on the power of a co-equal branch of government.”

De Lima earlier lauded the U.S. government’s move, saying that it recognizes that she is a victim of political persecution. The U.S. 2020 Appropriations bill, which was signed into law by President Donald Trump, provides a “Prohibition on Entry. – The Secretary of State shall apply subsection to foreign government officials about whom the Secretary has credible information have been involved in the wrongful imprisonment of: Moustafa Kassem, an American citizen imprisoned by the Government of Egypt, and whose health is failing; and Senator Leila de Lima who was arrested in the Philippines in 2017.
