(2nd UPDATE) The US could announce a decision as soon as December 15 on providing the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.

KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian forces shot down 13 drones on Wednesday, December 14, officials said, as Russia launched its first major drone attack on the capital Kyiv in weeks and the United States considered sending its advanced Patriot air defense system to help Ukraine.

Some of the windows of nearby residential buildings had been smashed. Bits of the roof were strewn in the snow along with other debris. Shocked residents, wrapped up against the cold, inspected the damage. The white tail of a drone could be seen in the wreckage.

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that US Patriot missile defense systems would be a legitimate target for Russian strikes against Ukraine if Washington authorized their delivery to Kyiv. After a series of lightning Ukrainian counter-offensives which has seen Kyiv regain control over around half of the territory Moscow captured in the first weeks of the war, neither side has made significant territorial gains in the past month.
