UAAP: Seniors ready to lead the way in Ateneo's title defense

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles are counting on their veteran core to lead the way in their defense of the UAAP women's volleyball championship in Season 82.

And ready to step up as a leader this season is new team captain Ponggay Gaston, who is determined to showcase what she has learned from former Ateneo captains including De Leon and Madayag. "Now that you're older, you realize how much of an impact your seniors are," she said. "Because you're young, what you see, you'll either imitate it or you'd be like, 'I don't wanna imitate her, she's a hypocrite.' Alam mo 'yun?"

Yet as prepared as she is to take on the responsibility, Gaston is still thankful that Tolentino, Maraguinot, and Lavitoria all returned to the squad. The Ateneo seniors are all in synch, said Gaston, and their mindset rubs off on their younger teammates. She is especially proud of how the returning players' work ethic and winning mentality have impacted their squad.

With their seniors leading the charge, the Lady Eagles are upbeat about their chances in UAAP Season 82. The season appears to be wide open, as every team comes in with question marks. Even Ateneo, with all its preparation and added firepower, still needs to address the usual concerns about their spotty reception.
