The US strikes, which also hit Syria, came after a barrage of 30 or more rockets was fired on Friday, December 27, at the K1 Iraqi military base in Kirkuk, an oil-rich region north of Baghdad, killing a US civilian contractor and wounding 4 US service members as well as Iraqi security forces. The strikes against 3 locations in Iraq and two in Syria"will degrade KH's ability to conduct future attacks" against coalition forces, the statement added.
Another powerful pro-Iran faction, Assaib Ahl al-Haq – whose leaders were recently hit with US sanctions – called for Americans to withdraw from Iraq. Friday's attack on the K1 base in Kirkuk involved a direct hit on an ammunition depot caused secondary explosions, and 4 more rockets were found in their tubes in a truck at the launch point, according to a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Protesters, many of whom grew up in the post-Saddam era, have vented their anger at a government they consider inept, corrupt and beholden to Iran.
