THINK ON THESE: Indigenous people can help curb climate change

We have been hearing about global warming and climate change. In fact, several international conferences have been made on climate change. In the Philippines, we are doing various workshops and training on how to stop this global phenomenon.

In principle, PES has “communities help conserve and manage ecosystem services, such as watershed services and landscape beauty.” For doing so, they would “be compensated for the work… by those who benefit from such services.” At least 10,000 hectares of the park has been declared as the tribe’s ancestral domain. In the past, it has done eco-restoration work in about 1,500 hectares of BNP’s forest. EEPSEA selected the site for the study “because the Aytas need funds to allow them to conserve and manage their ancestral lands, which are under constant threat.”

Four different scenarios, which represented different levels of conservation work, were used in the analysis: high, medium high, medium low, and low. For instance, in the high scenario level, 100% of the old growth forest would be protected, 80% of the second growth forest would be enriched, and 50% of the brushland would be reforested. In the low scenario level, the respective scenarios would be 100%, 50%, and 20%.

* Under the “low” scenario, the total carbon benefits that the project would bring would amount to 5.53 MtC or 20.26 MtCO2e. Under the “high” scenario, total carbon benefits would be 6.84 MtC or 25.07 MtCO2e, In summary, the project’s net present value and internal rate of return for the forest area that would be managed over 30 years is P170.271 million and 40%, respectively.
