EVEN though God already mentioned in Malachi 2:16 that 'He hates divorce,' the Pharisees in Jesus' time wanted to test him on the subject. This confrontation is recorded in the 19th chapter of Matthew when they asked our Lord, 'Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?'Christ then answered through an allusion to the time of Adam and Eve, where God first established the mystery of covenantal marriage.
This is most true and real in covenantal marriage, which, as discussed in the first part of this article, is a covenant between the husband, the wife, and God, as the author. That is why in our Family Code, marriage is described as a 'special contract' and not just an ordinary one. What made it special is the cultural and traditional belief of the Filipinos that God is at the center of marriage and that marriages are of divine authorship, origin and purpose.
