The Philippines is slowly gaining ground against avian influenza as the national government declared another province free from the dreaded transboundary animal disease.

The DA explained that it has not recorded a positive case of bird flu in South Cotabato province for more than 40 days after the last clean up and disinfection operations in the affected farms. The DA noted that an area may regain its bird flu free status after a minimum period of 28 days, and after a stamping-out policy has been completed, disinfection of the last affected establishment was carried out and consequent surveillance demonstrated the absence of infection based on the Terrestrial Animal Health Code of the World Organisation for Animal Health.
