Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Monday said the Philippine government should be careful in dealing with the United Nations (UN) regarding its campaign against illegal drugs.

Sotto made the appeal after he hit the UN Office of Drug and Crime’s figures on the number of drug dependents in the Philippines as compared to other countries.“We should be very careful with [our] relationship with the United Nations, especially the UNODC. Parang iba ang dating eh . And they believe what they read in the newspapers.

During the plenary deliberation, Senator Panfilo Lacson said that as of June this year, there are a total of 2,211 drug dependents admitted in Department of Health-accredited rehabilitation centers, as well as those maintained by local government units, private firms and non-government organizations.

“Oh, dapat ‘yong United Nations Office on Drug and Crime, ‘pag ire-report nila ilan ang drug dependents sa Pilipinas, 2,211 lang ,” Sotto reacted. Sotto recalled attending an UNODC meeting in Vienna, Austria to personally ask the body on the basis of its figures about the drug abuse problem in the Philippines.“I was surprised at this figure that this United Nations office was blurting out,” Sotto said.“Ang sinabi , if I’m not mistaken, [is that] there are less than 500,000 drug dependents daw in China. Eh, billion ang tao nila ,” he said, adding that the UNODC was referring to the number of drug dependents in rehabilitation centers.

Sotto’s remarks during the discussion on the DDB and PDEA budgets came right after they submitted for approval the Office of the Vice President’s 2020 budget.Last week, she said she met UNODC officials, following her designation as co-chair of the Interagency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs .
