SM and Robinsons malls on Sunday implement health protocols for the safety of mall-goers. With the easing of restrictions in areas under MECQ, several malls and commercial centers reopened on Saturday after two months of ECQ in Luzon.
Non-leisure shops in malls were also allowed to reopen at 50-percent capacity, so that the public can avail of essential goods and services. Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said only about 20 percent of stores opened and the crowd was estimated about less than 30 percent than pre-COVID-19 days.
Heightened safety measures including mandatory thermal checks, compulsory wearing of face masks, cashless transactions, shortened mall hours, placing directional floor markings, constant disinfection of areas, and centralization of pick up points are among the safeguards that are currently being implemented in malls.Furthermore, cinemas, play areas, and rest areas remained closed to the public. Free Wi-Fi is also disabled to prevent shoppers from loitering inside the malls.
On Sunday, Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año warned that the DILG will shut down malls that continuously fail to strictly enforce physical distancing, after photos and videos of people violating physical distancing inside malls went viral on social media.
