The mayor from a town in Negros Oriental prepared a budget of ₱3 million for the purchase of boat tickets to bring home around 800 Siatanons.

In a phone interview, Diaz said since the start of the pandemic, many of his constituents have been calling for help to be repatriated home from Manila.

He added that most of them were construction workers, security guards, waiters, and other minimum wage earners who lost their jobs because of the pandemic. Diaz said that through their coordination with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, an initial batch of some 300 Siatanons were processed at the Quirino Grandstand and screened for COVID-19 using antigen tests before boarding the vessels on Wednesday.

They are expected to arrive in Siaton on Friday morning, where they will be swabbed again and quarantined for 14 days in their respective barangay quarantine facilities.Roy August Bustillo is CNN Philippines' correspondent in Dumaguete City.
