Three Senate committees are pushing for the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in May, 2020 to May, 2023.

Senate Bill No. 1043, which was a consolidation of five bills, proposes to move the holding of the village and youth polls.

Until their successors have been elected in the barangay polls, incumbent barangay officials shall remain in office in a hold-over capacity unless sooner removed or suspended. Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian wants the polls to be held in May, 2021; while Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. wants it in May, 2022; and Senators Nancy Binay and Christopher “Bong” Go prefer October, 2022.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon, in signing the committee report, admitted that he has reservations on the proposed date although he said he concurs with the postponement of the barangay elections.During his fourth State of the Nation Address last July, President Duterte asked Congress to postpone the barangay elections to October, 2022 “to rectify the truncated terms” of barangay officials and give them time to finish their programs.
