The Supreme Court (SC) has decided to provide security to former Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin who has been receiving death threats.

SC Spokesman Atty. Brian Keith F. Hosaka said: “Yes, the Supreme Court is providing retired CJ Bersamin security personnel.”

He said the former Chief Justice was taking the matter in stride and “was his normal and confident self.” Published reports stated that former Chief Justice Bersamin, then SC associate justice, executed an affidavit and identified former Abra governor Vicente Valera as the person with the strongest motive to kill his brother.

Regional trial court Judge and PJA President Felix P. Reyes said 31 trial court judges have been killed since 1999 and most of those killed were handling cases involving illegal drugs and heinous crimes. Peralta said: “We hope that we can device the system, either through legislation or through court initiative, the creation of security system patterned after the United States’ marshals.”
