The San Juan City local government announced Monday, Aug. 8, that it has sent financial aid to the province of Abra that was devastated by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on July 28.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora made the announcement after the passage of City Ordinance No. 36 which allows the city government to transfer P1,000,000 from its Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund to the provincial government of Abra.

According to the report made by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office , the damages caused by the earthquake have affected 80 percent of the total population of Abra. Major private and government infrastructure facilities and properties were severely damaged. On Sunday, Aug. 7, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center said that the cost of damage to infrastructure due to the earthquake has reached ₱1.59 billion.

It added that 1,519 establishments were affected by the earthquake. Most of these are located in Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region , and Cagayan Valley.The quake’s death toll stood at 11, while the number of injured individuals climbed to 574.
