“Likewise, the sincerity in pursuing the talks is inevitably linked to the release of all political prisoners in the country as an issue of justice,” she added, noting that of the 629 political prisoners held by the government as of November 2019, a total of 382 were arrested under the current administration.

Palabay insisted political detainees should be immediately released in line with the government’s obligations under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law and the Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees.Palabay maintained that progress in the peace talks can only be realized “if the militarist voices are drowned out and militarist policies are withdrawn and junked.
