The Department of Social Welfare and Development is ready to provide P15,000 in cash assistance to small rice retailers who may incur losses due to the Malacañang-mandated price ceiling on rice, which became effective on Tuesday, even as the House Committee on Appropriations searches for unprogrammed funds in the 2023 General Appropriations Act to augment this funding.

The DSWD chief said the SLP currently has a P5.5 billion budget, which can be immediately used to help cushion the impact of the price cap on rice, particularly among small rice retailers who have very small inventories. “Hopefully, by next week, we can conduct a payout for the sustainable livelihood grant to our affected rice retailers,” he said.

“We are looking at the unprogrammed fund, and hopefully, it has been checked that there are available funds, and at the same time, Secretary Rex still has funds,” Co said.
