After receiving flak from students, teachers and netizens alike, the Department of Education (DepEd) has clarified that “no final decision” has been made yet on whether or not the current school year will be extended.

“It has not been decided yet,” DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio told the Manila Bulletin when asked to confirm if the agency will extend the school year 2020-2021.

In particular, San Antonio said that the key officials of DepEd have yet to decide if the “summer” vacation – which traditionally lasts for two months in April to May – will be cut short due to the planned extension of the school year. San Antonio said that members of the Management and Executive committees of DepEd hold regular weekly meetings. “Hopefully, in the next next Mancom/Execom meeting, there will be a decision already,” he explained. “We will release a DepEd Order once a decision has been made,” he added.

In several interviews, DepEd said that it is planning to extend the current school year as part of its academic ease measures. Extending the school calendar aims to give more time to students who might be having a hard time submitting or completing their academic requirements in the schedule set by their schools.

Aside from getting negative feedback from teachers and youth groups, DepEd also became trending in various social media sites with netizens calling out the agency for “prolonging the agony” of students, parents, and teachers under the distance learning set-up.
