Reject the Trump ‘peace plan’

From what details have already been shared, it is clear that any superlatives that could be attached to it only serve the interests of those two men, and that, if followed, the plan will intensify unrest in an already tense part of the world. The creation of the peace plan was led by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, a real estate developer with no experience in diplomacy or Mideast affairs and no official position within the US government.

The worst aspect of the Trump “peace plan,” however, is that it was “negotiated” without any participation from Palestinian representatives whatsoever. That makes it much less a “peace plan” than “imposed terms of surrender,” and the Palestinian authorities and people immediately recognized it as such.

From a broader perspective, the Trump “peace plan” is contrary to our own principles, demonstrated by the successful negotiations to create the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and bring peace to Mindanao, of resolving conflict through inclusive dialogue. Imposing conditions on a people without consulting them and then presenting those conditions as a “peace plan” is morally wrong, and to accept it would be to invite similar treatment.
