KOTA KINABALU: Probably like many others around the world, as a kid I had my first impression of global affairs beyond our beloved Southeast Asia in the turbulence of the Middle East. If I recall correctly, it was in the early 1980s when Israel invaded its northern neighbor Lebanon to clear out the many Palestinian militants then stationed there. Very soon, another neighbor, Syria, and even further away, Iran, also got involved in the Lebanese situation. There were various camps of Lebanese mili

tias with different ethnic and religious backgrounds and aligned to the different powers at play in Lebanon, opening fire at one another. Even the United States got entangled in Lebanon at one point, but withdrew after its Marines barracks were bombed.

These were tragic and were apt material for studies in international conflicts. So, it was supposed to be the brink of a diplomatic breakthrough when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the rostrum at the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month and reported that Israel and Saudi Arabia were engaged in close negotiations that could lead to normalization of their bilateral relations.
