Reigning MVP Malick Diouf stepped up as University of the Philippines dumped University of the East, 84-79, in the first round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, Oct.

4, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The 6-foot-11 big man carried the fight for UP with another double-double performance of 19 points and 16 rebounds on an 8-of-10 shooting including two steals and three blocks. The Fighting Maroons led by as many as 26 points in the opening period, 32-6, but the Red Warriors managed to stage a comeback and even cut the deficit by a single digit, 62-53, in the fourth period on a Rey Remogat layup before he was pulled out from the game due minor cramps.

With two minutes left in regulation, Malick and Cansino had been taking turns to keep UP’s huge advantage.
