Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto urged on Saturday the Department of Education (DepEd) to solve its delays in delivering books and school equipment.

Recto, in a statement, lamented the lack of books in the country’s public schools after the Commission on Audit found that the DepEd, in 2018, delivered only 11.2 million books and learning materials, or 31 percent, of its target 38.6 million to students.

State auditors also found the DepEd delivering none of its thousands of science, math, ICT and technical-vocational equipment that it was supposed to distribute for 2018.Recto stressed the need to “constantly replenish” the learning resources for 22.6 million students in the 47,025 schools all over the country.

“I know that Secretary Liling is enraged as well and the strict professor whose dedication to work and love for education are unquestionable will never tolerate this continuing debacle,” he added, referring to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones.Recto suggested the hiring of procurement, logistics and supply chain experts who will address red tape in the agency and ensure that the needed educational materials are being delivered to public schools on time.

As for the government, Recto said concerned officials should look into using a “multiyear framework” on the needs of schools to improve planning and funding.
