Police Master Sergeant Daniel Florendo Jr gunned down a certain Winston Ragos on Tuesday at around 2:30 pm near a quarantine control point along Maligaya Drive in Barangay Pasong Putik, Quezon City. Ragos allegedly"ignored" the cops and identified himself as a former soldier. Cops said Ragos carried a loaded caliber 38 revolver inside his sling bag, and Florendo"cautiously approached Ragos."
Florendo then shot Ragos twice, staggering the victim. Ragos stood up, limped for a few seconds, before falling to the ground.In a text message to Rappler, Florendo's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bilaro said Ragos was"mentally challenged", but they"belatedly found out." It was unclear what mental illness affected Ragos.

Unpopular opinion, but mentally challenged or not, the 'victim' was noticeably gesturing as though he were going to pull out a gun. The logical reaction of any officer would be to defend himself (i.e. subdue the attacker). The shooting was done out of self-defense.

It can be argued that the policeman made a fatal judgement. But then, this kind of scenario can be avoided with a compassionate mindset. This is why we need the government to address this crisis with compassion, and not with a mind set of militarization

Imagine pointing a gun to a person with a history of PTSD. What would you expect? For sure, hindi kalalma yan. It's their job to deescalate the situation. There were 5 of them. Is shooting the person the only resort in these kind of situations?
