Pope Francis said Sunday that he was following "attentively" the "often complex" life of Catholics in China, without directly referencing a 90-year-old cardinal arrested in Hong Kong this month.

"I attentively and actively follow the often complex life and the matters of the faithful and pastors, and I pray every day for them," the pontiff told the public gathered in St. Peter's Square. Vatican Media/ Handout via REUTERS/ File photo

VATICAN CITY, Holy See — Pope Francis said Sunday that he was following "attentively" the "often complex" life of Catholics in China, without directly referencing a 90-year-old cardinal arrested in Hong Kong this month. "I attentively and actively follow the often complex life and the matters of the faithful and pastors, and I pray every day for them," the pontiff told the public gathered in St. Peter's Square.

The Vatican said at the time it was concerned by Zen's arrest and "following the development of the situation very closely." Zen has been critical of the Vatican's decision to reach a compromise with China over the appointment of bishops on the mainland, and critics have accused the Vatican of downplaying his arrest.

US House Speaker Pelosi barred from Catholic communion over abortion stanceUS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can no longer take communion because she supports abortion rights and also publicly invokes her Catholic faith, the archbishop of San Francisco said in a letter released on Friday. Are not politics and religion to be kept separate? As a Catholic... Finally.... She needs to confess her sins and change her ways At least the US clergy actually have courage to uphold sanctity of the Eucharist. Our clergy probably has good reason to not deny Communion, especially to erring politicians. But I still hope to see some priests refuse to give in.
