For many years, dramatic top shot images of the sea of Black Nazarene devotees along the iconic Jones Bridge in Manila often lands news dailies.

But this year’s “Traslacion” or the annual procession of the image of the Black Nazarene – a statue of a dark-skinned, kneeling Jesus Christ carrying a cross – will be different as the usual route has been altered due to the government’s improvement works.

In an ambush interview, DPWH engineer Ed Santos, told the Manila Bulletin that the bridges have been undergoing retrofitting.

To recall, a series of deadly tremors hit the country last year that claimed hundreds of lives and damaged millions of pesos worth of property in southern Philippines. Santos remains unsure whether or not Jones Bridge will be used for next year’s more or less 22-hour procession.
