Senator Grace Poe lamented on Wednesday, April 14, reports of cruelty and violence by law enforcers and ground authorities amid the continuing implementation of community quarantine in the country.

Poe, in a statement, said the “miseries” of Filipinos during the novel coronavirus disease pandemic “should not be aggravated by the cruelty and violence of unworthy ground authorities who think they are above the law and can do what they want with impunity.”

“The perpetrators of these acts of violence must face the full force and severity of the law,” she appealed, adding that their immediate superiors must also be held accountable under the principle of command responsibility. Poe issued the remarks in the wake of the call for justice for a Ernanie Jimenez, who was allegedly beaten to death by two village watchmen last April 7 for violating the curfew in Calamba, Laguna.

“The perilous plight faced by the defenseless and vulnerable should not be further scorned by the harsh and ignominious blows from supposed ‘community protectors’,” Poe said.
