MANILA- The Philippine National Police said Wednesday it was modifying checkpoints to ease traffic as more vehicles ply roads after the government lessened travel restrictions.

Joint Task Force COVID-19 Shield commander Police Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said authorities would randomly check vehicles at checkpoints to decongest traffic.

"Magche-check tayo ng mga sasakyan, proper checking, pero 'pag nakita natin na mahaba na ang pila puwedeng irelease natin siya freely then after that 'pag medyo maluwag na magche-check ulit tayo," he said in a public briefing. Checkpoints have caused traffic as Filipinos returned to work across the country as the government eased quarantine restrictions to boost economic activity even as coronavirus infections in the country continued to rise.

Eleazar said fewer violations of checkpoint protocols were recorded since the weekend as the majority of travelers were allowed to be out of their homes. Despite the easing of travel restrictions, Eleazar said the PNP still maintains some 4,000 checkpoints across the country.
