The Philippine National Police (PNP) is now looking for effective surveillance equipment that it would recommend to President Duterte who promised to fund the improvement of the intelligence-gathering capability of both the police and the military.

PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said that the President had already asked the police and the military leadership to submit recommendations on what equipment would be bought.

In his State of the Nation Address, Duterte vowed to improve the intelligence-monitoring capability of the police and the militaryThe official said improved intelligence capability is a necessity amid the threats of terrorism. Last month, it was recalled that two suicide bombers, one of them was confirmed to be a Filipino, blew themselves up inside a military camp in Sulu. Three civilians and three soldiers died while more than 20 others were injured.

Albayalde said they also have to improve their intelligence capability against the decades-long problem on communist insurgency. The PNP leadership has been pushing for the procurement of surveillance equipment but is usually faced with obstacles in getting the approval of the Congress over privacy issues.Aside from the equipment, Albayalde said Duterte also promised to improve the training and skills development of policemen and soldiers.
