As the waiting game for the announcement of the next top cop continues, a ranking police official said that the Philippine National Police (PNP) needs a leader that will help heal the organization from the controversies it got itself entangled into in the past months.

Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon, director of the Central Visayas regional police, said the next PNP chief should focus on the restoration of the tarnished image of the police organization, what with the scandal that rocked the organization over the involvement of resigned PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde to the alleged recycling of shabu.

The PNP was recently rocked with a serious scandal of drug recycling and extortion of multi-million pesos from a drug lord by Pampanga policemen in 2013, which forced Albayalde to quit his post since he was the provincial director of Pampanga then. De Leon explained that it is not only the ranking police officials who were affected by the scandal but all of the uniformed personnel due to negative implications on public perception on the police profession.

This, he said, is on top of the requirements that the next PNP chief should help continue the anti-illegal drugs campaign of the President and to impose strong discipline among the 195,000-strong policemen.
