MANILA - A Filipina faces possible death penalty in Malaysia for allegedly trafficking some 5.9 kilos of shabu, local media reported Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Filipina, who was not identified, was arrested early Tuesday in a drug raid in Manggatal town, Sabah, according to The Star.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo, in a statement, said the government will provide free legal assistance to the Filipina."If she is found guilty unfairly by the Malaysian court, then we can avail of legal remedies available under the Malaysian legal system to exonerate her. But if evidence proves that she is deeply involved in drug trafficking, then we will let the law take its course.

Authorities recovered 5.9 kilograms of drugs worth RM275,000 , which police said belongs to a man that has yet to be arrested. "We are hoping to trace the man and main supplier as soon as possible,” Sabah deputy police commissioner Datuk Zaini Jass told local reporters. Under Malaysian laws, those caught with relatively small quantities of cannabis, heroin and cocaine may be charged with drug-trafficking and face the death penalty.
