The program aims to “promote various aspects of Philippine studies—primarily focusing on the country’s history, culture, and society—through a series of seminars with carefully selected topics, researches, and publications that would provide Spanish students with a more nuanced knowledge of the Philippines.”
The Cátedra Extraordinaria de Filipinas , a Philippine Studies Program at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid would help to create a network of Filipino-Spanish researchers and a database of their Philippine-centric research. This would also help curate and publish works on Philippines-Spain relations and history in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Spanish arrival in the Philippines.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin Jr., and house Deputy Speaker Antique Representative Loren Legarda, witnessed the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe J. Lhuillier, and Professor Dr. Don Joaquin Goyache Goñi, Rector Magnifico of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid on Dec. 13.
