THE Philippines logged its highest single-day tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections at 19,441 on Saturday, the Department of Health (DoH) said.

The Philippines has again logged a record-high 19,441daily tally of Covid-19 infections on Saturday while also reporting a high positivity rate of 27.5 percent, the Department of Health said. This puts the total number of Covid-19 infections in the country at 1.935 million, of which, 142,679 are active cases.Of the active cases, 97.3 percent are mild and asymptomatic cases, nearly 1 percent are moderate infections, while the rest are severe or critical cases.Recoveries also shot up to 1.

Research estimated that the country would reach the peak of 20,000 cases in a single day this week though infection reproduction rate is slowly decreasing.'We haven't peaked yet. Cases are still rising in the Philippines, but the reproduction number has decreased but this is still greater than one - they are increasing at a slow rate,'

senior research fellow Dr. Guido David told The Manila Times in a telephone interview.David added that while there is a possibility that the 20,000-case per day peak could still go higher, he believes that it will not breach the 25,000-case per day mark.'What we're expecting after we reach 20,000 or 21,000, we might reach the peak and then it would gradually decrease but this is not a guarantee, because trends in the Philippines are different,' David said.

data said intensive care unit bed utilization nationwide was at 74 percent, while ward and isolation beds occupancy were at 70 percent and 63 percent, respectively. NCR, other areas to remain under MECQ until September 7Malacañang announced on Saturday that the NCR and 15 other areas in the country will remain under modified enhanced community quarantine or MECQ until September 7.
