The Department of National Defense (DND) is eyeing the purchase of unmanned surveillance drones and other weapons after President Duterte announced that he will consider buying military hardware from the United States.

DND spokesman Arsenio Andolong said that the department was actually planning to take advantage of the announcement of US President Donald Trump of selling at least 34 Boeing-made ScanEagle drones to allies in South China Sea region amid the aggressive posturing of China in the East and South China Seas.

“Although we have already received an UAV ScanEagle from the Air Force, we are still looking to acquire more of equipment of similar nature,” he added. The incident resulted in the Philippines finding other sellers of weapons such as Russia. The procurement of 16 helicopters for the Philippine Air Force was also diverted to Poland after Canada refused to sell military choppers to the Philippines also over human rights concerns.
