Congress gave the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) additional funding under the P4.5-trillion 2021 General Appropriations Act (GAA) to ensure that indigent patients would be able to avail themselves of free medical services for the entire year, Sen. Juan Edgar

Angara, chairman of the Senate finance committee, said the PGH was provided with an additional P1.54 billion in its budget.

The additional budget for the PGH would also result in the accommodation of more patients who need to undergo heart surgery. With the intervention introduced by Angara, the PGH would be able to perform life-saving heart surgeries on as many as 200 patients for 2021. Angara said the 2021 budget would also provide funding support for the implementation of Republic Act No. 11358, or the National Vision Screening Act.
